Plankton under Pressure: How Water Conditions Alter the Phytoplankton–Zooplankton Link in Coastal Lagoons

نویسندگان

چکیده

Transitional waters (TWs), such as coastal lagoons, are bodies of surface water at the transition between saline and freshwater domains. These environments play a vital role in guaranteeing ecosystem services, including provision food, protection against meteorological events, anthropogenic carbon sinks, filtering pollutants. Due to escalating overpopulation characterising coastlines worldwide, transitional systems over-exploited, degraded, reduced their macroscopic features. However, information on impact pressures planktonic organisms these is still scanty fragmented. Herein, we summarise literature, with special focus lagoons undergoing pressure. Specifically, report implications human impacts ecological state plankton, i.e., fundamental component aquatic ecosystems. Literature indicates that forces may alter structures functions other TWs estuaries, hampering phytoplankton–zooplankton link, main trophic process occurring those communities, which sustains productivity. Changes dominance lifestyle key players, plus invasion ‘alien’ species, consequent regime shifts, among most common outcomes disturbance.

Metagenomes of Mediterranean Coastal Lagoons

Coastal lagoons, both hypersaline and freshwater, are common, but still understudied ecosystems. We describe, for the first time, using high throughput sequencing, the extant microbiota of two large and representative Mediterranean coastal lagoons, the hypersaline Mar Menor, and the freshwater Albufera de Valencia, both located on the south eastern coast of Spain. We show there are considerable...

Voltage Equalization of DC Link capacitors in a CHB-Based PET under the Unbalance Voltage Conditions

The unbalance currents injection by power electronic transformers in order to improve the unbalance voltage conditions of the network causes an imbalanced voltage in the DC link capacitors and creates an active powers inequality in the different phases. In this paper, the proposed control structure independently controls the active power of each phase by modifying the power angle between the vo...

Biodiversity and Conservation of Coastal Lagoons

Wetlands are sites of high biodiversity and productivity (Mitsch & Gosselink, 2000). They provide essential services, such as maintenance of atmosphere composition, key habitats for migratory species, and important nursery areas (Basset & Abbiati, 2004), but these ecosystems have suffered a serious decline worldwide due to human influence (Shine & Klemm, 1999; Solimini et al., 2008; Stenert & M...

Eutrophication in shallow coastal bays and lagoons: the role of plants in the coastal filter

Nutrient loading to coastal bay ecosystems is of a similar magnitude as that to deeper, river-fed estuaries, yet our understanding of the eutrophication process in these shallow systems lags far behind. In this synthesis, we focus on one type of biotic feedback that influences eutrophication patterns in coastal bays—the important role of primary producers in the ‘coastal filter’. We discuss the...

Scalar Flux–Gradient Relationships Under Unstable Conditions over Water in Coastal Regions

The scalar flux–gradient relationships of temperature (φT ) and specific humidity (φq ) under unstable conditions are investigated using eddy-covariance measurements of air– sea turbulent fluxes and vertical profiles of temperature and specific humidity collected from a marine meteorological platform. The gradients of temperature and specific humidity are obtained frommeasurements at five heigh...
